Here are some tips and recommendations to properly store your clothes.

The best way to store your clothes is to place them in air tight plastic containers with a lid. Avoid plastic bags as these can trap moisture and cause mildew to form or cause the yellowing of fabrics.

When storing clothing, do not place them in plastic dry cleaners bags because the ink often printed on these bags can permanently stain clothing over time in a storage unit.

If you’re storing old clothes, we recommend investing in a hanger cascader system which is space efficient and convenient.

Should you vacuum seal your clothes? This can be a tough decision as there is evidence that supports both using and not using this method to store your clothes long term.

It is agreed that vacuum sealing your clothes is a great space saver. However, many people have cited instances that their clothes have become damaged after remaining in these bags for a long period of time…after months and years in storage. The damage is possible because most natural fiber clothing needs air to maintain its structure and integrity and that by sucking all of the air out of the bag, you are compressing the garments and compressing the fibers. Once removed from these bags, it takes a long time for the fibers to uncompress and become wearable again.

For any extremely valuable or sentimental clothing, you may not want to run the risk associated with vacuum seal bags. Clothes in a vacuum-sealed bag that do not allow air flow in an area with high humidity can result in mold or mildew growth, which will damage the clothing.

In either case, you will want to be sure to label any bags containing clothing as you will forget the contents after months and years in storage.
